Are White Fillings Right For You?

Alternatives to amalgam fillings at your Egham dentist.

When you visit the dentist and need fillings you will usually be offered two different choices, amalgam (silver coloured fillings), or white fillings.

The cheapest option are silver fillings, however, many people do prefer a more natural look in the way of white fillings. This is because silver fillings can show when you laugh or smile, and whilst some people simply don't like that look, other people have no issue with it at all.

Here at your local Egham dentist, we offer both white and silver fillings. Patients who might consider white fillings will usually do so for aesthetic reasons; however some people do have health concerns regarding the mercury component used in amalgam and so select them for that reason. We must state at this point that the various governing medical bodies in the UK suggest that amalgam fillings are safe and that they are still in very wide use.

Are White Fillings More Expensive Than Amalgam Fillings?

White fillings are more expensive than amalgam fillings but there is no set price, it depends on the dentist and the work that needs completing. Your Egham dentist will be able to give you a price for any work that needs completing.

Are White Fillings As Effective As Silver Fillings?

In the past, white fillings would have been considered less effective than silver fillings in that they wouldn't last as long. However, new materials are now available that mean white fillings are much more durable than they used to be. The life expectancy of any filling will be affected by its location in your mouth and your bite.

Can I Replace Silver Fillings With White Fillings?

You can, but we would recommend you only change your fillings if you need to, to limit any trauma to teeth.

Does An Alternative To Fillings Exist?

There are some alternatives that may be suitable for your dental needs, such as a crown, inlay or veneers. However these can be costly and might not suit your individual dental needs. Your TW20 dentist will be able to advise you on any suitable alternatives you might want to consider. You can expect complete transparency in regards to pricing.

How Can I Avoid Fillings?

Prevention is much better than cure, so we always recommend patients maintain a high standard of dental hygiene and excellent dental habits as much as possible. Habits that can contribute towards dental decay and dental issues include:

●     Eating and drinking lots of sugary and starchy foods

●     Smoking

●     Snacking between meals

Refined sugars and foods containing processed white flour are generally bad for the teeth and no matter how great your dental hygiene habits are, a bad diet will take its toll; on your teeth, and your overall health. A good dental hygiene regime is also extremely important and requires you brush with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day brushing thoroughly and replacing your toothbrush regularly. You should also visit your dentist for regular checkups, and also if there are any dental issues in between appointments.
