Ready For School Time?

Ready For School Time?

Is your child’s smile ready too?

School is starting again, or has already started for many children this week. This is both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time, for both the parents and the children.

Throughout summer they have been very relaxed, enjoying themselves eating summer treats, playing sports, playing with friends, and possibly getting a few more late nights than they are used to!

This can mean it is an absolute nightmare getting them back into the routine of getting ready for school, applying themselves at school, and completing homework afterwards. With this in mind, we wanted to give you a few tips to help with your child’s oral health routine, so that you’re equipped to help them maintain healthy teeth and gums and to help them feel good about looking after their smile:

Start The Routine ASAP

If your child is not back at school yet, or they have just gone back, then a routine needs to happen ASAP. The sooner they begin getting used to their oral health routine the better because it takes a good month or so for habits to form, and they may well take time to get used to it. Consider having something like a timed tooth brushing song, so you all know that when the song is playing, teeth are needing to be brushed! This should last for two minutes.

Get A Checkup Or Hygienist Appointment

Your child needs regular checkups with your Egham dentist just like you do, and the best thing to do at the start of the school year is get those appointments booked in. At the appointment your child will have their oral health checked, and any tweaks or changes that need to happen to their oral health regimen will be discussed. Oral hygienists can also help with extra appointments for teeth cleaning, oral health regime advice and fluoride application. Getting those appointments completed or at least booked in now, is great organisation for the year ahead.

Get Healthy Lunch Habits On The Go

You cannot control everything your child consumes at school, especially if they are in secondary school. However you can encourage the best habits possible at home. Making them healthy lunches with crunchy fruit and vegetables, calcium rich yogurts and sandwich fillings, and plenty of water will go a long way. You can also prepare dinners at home that are low sugar and high in nutrients so that your children get excited about healthy food.

Get A Mouthguard

Your child might enjoy contact sports like rugby at school, in which case a mouthguard from your Egham dentist is a good idea. They are made to fit the unique shape of your child’s mouth unlike shop bought mouthguards which are a one-size-fits-all shape.
