The versatile dental crown

More about this common dental treatment.

At our Egham dentist we provide a broad range of general treatment as well as a wide range of cosmetic dentistry, the latter of which is increasing in demand. Porcelain crowns come under both of these categories. Made from a very natural and aesthetically pleasing looking porcelain, they are created and added to improve your smile.

They can also be used to match other teeth whilst strengthening the tooth structure you already have at the same time. Crowns are usually the type of restorative dentistry used when a filling simply won't work any more, or isn't advised. Fillings can, when used in the wrong instances, weaken the tooth, whereas crowns provide support from underneath.

When You Might Need A Crown

There are lots of instances where you might need a crown instead of a filling, and we may recommend it on its own or as part of a wider treatment package depending on your needs. You may need a crown when:

●     A tooth that was previously filled is now so full of filling, there is more filling there than actual tooth which means the structure of the tooth is weak and the filling can no longer be supported.

●     Decay to such an extent it is considered extensive

●     Tooth discolouration

●     The existing tooth that is seen making the overall smile aesthetics look less desirable than they could with a porcelain crown

●     Tooth trauma and fractures

●     When a weakened tooth needs protecting by a crown following root canal

●     To work with a bridge

Crowns will make the remaining tooth stronger and help to protect it. A crown can be made from ceramics, porcelain or even gold so you aren't restricted to just one material, although the different materials do have their pro's and con's, which we can discuss with you during your appointment.

Fitting The Crown

When we do a crown fitting we will usually schedule in a couple of appointments. During your first visit to our Egham clinic we will take an impression of the tooth and place a temporary crown there. During visit two we will take away the temporary crown and add the permanent crown, checking it is right and then fixing it in place.

Is A Porcelain Crown Right For Me?

There are lots of different factors which will affect whether or not a porcelain crown is the right choice for you. At Crown House Dental we always take care to ensure our patients are fully aware of all their choices, and what those choices involved including price, time and aesthetics. So if you are unsure about getting a porcelain crown, we can give you all the information you need to make the right decision for you.
