Tooth Whitening at Crown House

Posted by Crown House Dental on 21st November 2019

We have seen more and more of our patients inquiring about tooth whitening as everyone seems to want that bright white smile.

Tooth whitening methods can date back to 4000 years ago when ancient Egyptians made a whitening paste using pumice stone and wine vinegar. Having white teeth was a mark of beauty and wealth. Fast forward to the late 1980ʼs when dentists stumbled across the technique of using trays with peroxide in when peroxide was used to treat gums as an antiseptic gel. They realised the side effects was that the teeth were whitened and so this is when mass marketing of the product started. Tooth whitening is for sure a popular treatment globally as in 2016 the market amounted to 3.15 billion dollars and was set to hit 3.78 billion dollars by 2021.

Tooth whitening involves bleaching your teeth to make them lighter by several shades. Everyone can get staining from every day items we come in contact with such as tea and coffee also some people just have a natural darker shade due to genetics, medications or diseases. Smoking also can contribute to discolouration. The process of whitening involves taking impressions so a special tray can be custom made for you. This will be the tray you will use at home to apply the bleach. These trays are worn either overnight or for a few hours a day for around 2 weeks or sooner if your desired shade is achieved. Whitening can last anywhere from a few months to a few years and the trays can easily be kept so top up sessions can be completed.

It is always best to talk to your dentist regarding side effects and to see if it suitable for you. People who have crowns or fillings towards the front need to be aware that these will not change in shade. Sensitivity is also a factor to take into consideration and can vary depending on what concentration you use. While whitening, diet also needs to be adjusted due to your teeth becoming porous this means your teeth will absorb the colourings from foods and drinks.boutique whitening in surrey
