The Difference Between Salon Whitening And Professional Dental Whitening

Posted by Crown House Dental on 23rd January 2018

Be safe at Crown House Dental in Egham.

Here at Crown House Dental we often get asked what the difference is between professional teeth whitening at the dentist, and whitening at a beauty salon.

It is important to answer this question because having teeth whitening at a beauty salon is likely not only unsafe, but almost certainly illegal.

The Tooth Whitening Revolution

Over the last decade, dentists have gone from providing restorative and general dentistry treatments, to offering cosmetic dentistry too. This happened because celebrities began openly talking about the treatments they had done to enhance their smile, and so, public demand prompted general dental practices to look to provide cosmetic dentistry at an affordable price. Now, most dental surgeries offer some types of cosmetic dentistry, with teeth whitening being one of the most popular treatments offered. TOWIE (The Only Way Is Essex) played a big part in the surge in modern culture obsession with extremely white teeth!

Beauty Salons Want A Piece Of The Pie

When teeth whitening began appearing as a treatment in dental clinics, it also began appearing in lots of other places. Beauty salons, spas and other places now offer teeth whitening, usually at a cut price. Sounds great right? It does sound great but unfortunately it is a really bad idea to have your teeth whitened anywhere but at your Egham dentists or other suitably trained dentist.

There are a few reasons for this....

The main two reasons revolve around the new laws around hydrogen peroxide which were released in 2013. These laws state that whitening products containing hydrogen peroxide of between 0.1% and 6% should not be on offer to the general public. Products of that type are only legal for use by registered GDC (General Medical Council) members such as registered dentists.

The way beauty salons without any GDC registration try get past these laws is either by offering treatments using illegal amounts of hydrogen peroxide which means they are breaking the law and putting you in danger. Or they use an amount of hydrogen peroxide so low it is legal for them to use, but it will either not have an effect or they will leave it on for much longer than they should potentially causing gum burns.

Gum burns are just one of the many safety issues that come with using an unqualified company to provide teeth whitening.

Even worse are 'over the internet' teeth whitening kits which can contain all kinds of horrible things that should not be used to whiten teeth, along with ineffective trays which do not adequately fit the teeth or protect the gums. With all of this in mind, it isn't hard to see the many potential dangers involved in getting teeth whitening anywhere other than your Egham dentist.

Book A Consultation For Teeth Whitening At Crown House Dental In Egham

Here at your local Egham dentist we use an at home whitening treatment called Polanight. It is just as effective and safe as in-house whitening, but it is cheaper and you have the convenience of being able to do it at home.

During an initial assessment we will assess your teeth and check the reasons for discolouration before performing a general assessment to ensure there aren't any treatments that need completing first. We will then take impressions of your teeth to make trays, before our dentists or hygienists show you how to use the special whitening gel in the trays at home.

The results are effective and often transformative. Please call us on 01784432641 and we will be pleased to book you a consultation for a safe and legal form of teeth whitening that will leave your smile looking bright, fresh and beautiful!
