4 Key Factors

Winter is quickly working its way in; in fact we started to feel its presence as soon as summer was over with the Christmas products turning up in supermarkets well in advance!

The season certainly has plenty of perks, but there's still a lot to be aware of when it comes to the cold, especially with your teeth.

Here are 4 things to keep in mind when it comes to your smile this winter:

1. Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth can really make themselves felt in winter because the cold wind makes them hurt even more. The hard outer layers of teeth that protect the nerves may be exposed, or there may be a crack in the tooth leaving them open to very cold or very hot substances, causing discomfort or even pain.

Commonly, there are several conditions that can lead to tooth sensitivity including cracked teeth, or gum disease. If you have started to experience discomfort in your teeth, it is important you see a dentist first so the reason for the sensitivity can be diagnosed. Any issues like a tooth crack or gum disease can be addressed and your Egham dentist will be able to advise you of how to manage sensitivity in the meantime, with methods like using a different types of toothbrush, or using special toothpaste.

2. Chapped Lips

Your lips are an important part of your mouth and chapped lips can cause a lot of pain and discomfort in winter. They can also make it hard to eat and drink, or even talk when they are really bad. If you are prone to chapped lips, try to protect them when you are out in the cold with a scarf. You may also want to use SPF lip balm, and/ or moisturising balms that are designed to penetrate the deeper layers of the lip skin. It may also help to stay hydrated as lips can dry out because your body is lacking water - lips dry out faster with cold winds and central heating, so they need extra moisture from the inside.

3. Toothache

There's nothing like toothache to ruin a party or festive event. Aside from having regular checkups with your Egham dentist and brushing regularly, it is also important to be aware of any dental issues you might be showing signs of. Pain in the teeth or gums, or bleeding of the gums, are signs you should book a dentist appointment. Don't wait till your next appointment as the sooner an issue is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated, helping you to avoid more pain and possibly more expensive and invasive treatment later on.

4. Coughs and Colds

Your mouth provides a line of defence against nasty germs and bacteria. If you have lots of plaque or less than healthy gums, bacteria and germs can compromise your health more quickly. Taking care of your teeth and gums means that you help your body defend itself against colds and other viruses that are commonly passed around in winter.
