Gum disease is something we would usually only consider being a problem that adults experience. Unfortunately, the real truth is that children are susceptible to gum disease too.
Less children are found with tooth decay than a decade ago because we are, as a society much more aware of the dangers of sugar, and many of us are making conscious choices when feeding our children. However, tooth decay and gum disease is certainly still a problem.
The Different Types Of Gum Disease Children May Be Susceptible To
Gingivitis Stage 1
This type of gum disease is the most common type found in children. Signs and symptoms will be the gums swelling, being red and bleeding very easily (usually noticed when brushing). This type of gum disease can be prevented with avoidance of sugary, acidic or starchy foods, and a great dental hygiene regimen of brushing, flossing and regular visits to the dentist. It is so important gum disease is caught at this stage so it doesn't progress to a more serious problem.
Gingivitis Stage 2
At this stage the molars and incisors are most likely to be affected. The primary teeth may be affected at a deeper level where they may rot and need to be removed prematurely.
Looking For Signs Of Gum Disease In Children
Even if your child is old enough to brush their teeth unsupervised, it is still important you check up on their oral routine regularly to check they are brushing right, and for long enough. You can also use this time to check for any signs of gum disease. Key signs of gum disease are:
Bleeding - Gums will bleed during brushing or flossing. They may also bleed easily at other times.
Swelling - Gums may turn bright red and swell up around the teeth. Children may complain of sore teeth and may avoid certain foods because of the discomfort.
Receding Gums - Gums may recede and in extreme cases - expose the roots of the teeth
Bad Breath - You may notice your child's breath is bad and the smell does not resolve with brushing
Early Diagnosis Matters
If a child has gum disease, the sooner it is diagnosed the better. Even if your child has the perfect oral health routine and diet, unfortunately they might still get gum disease. Gum disease can be a sign of other illnesses within the body, and teenagers may be more susceptible because of hormonal changes too.
