Food labels are much better than they used to be, letting us know how much fat, salt, saturated fat, protein and other components are in the processed food we eat.
The problem is, marketing is so much better than is was, so it isn't always clear at a glance that the food we are buying is not as good for us as it says it is.
This is why the traffic light system has been introduced, where food components like salt and sugar are labelled green, amber or red letting you know they have a high amount of that component, or a low amount. For example: a red colour for salt would mean it is high in salt and you should be aware of that when purchasing the product.
Understanding these labels is so important because it means that you are able to make informed choices about the products you buy and ultimately consume. This is relevant to your overall health, but also to your oral health. Ingredients like sugar in products can often be hidden, particularly if it is 'low fat'. This means you could buy a product you believe to be healthy, only to find it is actually really bad news for your teeth. The more you know about labelling, the more able you will be to make the best possible choices for your overall health and your oral health.
How Much Is Too Much?
With party season around the corner, remember these tips to help keep your teeth in great shape
As it starts to get colder and more blustery outside, most of us spend more time indoors, getting cosy with hot beverages and embracing the fantastic TV that begins at this time of year. However, there are still good reasons to go out in the hours outside of work, and that is because it will soon be party season! From bonfire parties, to Halloween and of course all the Christmas parties, there are plenty of exciting social events to look forward to during Autumn and Winter.
Despite the many smiles you're going to have going to all these parties, it isn't all fun and games for your teeth. You're likely to enjoy a tipple at these events if you do drink alcohol, and some alcoholic drinks are very bad for your teeth. Drinking responsibly will limit the damage, but just one high sugar and acidic drink per party means a regular assault on your smile throughout this season. With that in mind (and without wanting to spoil the fun too much!) here are some of the worst drinks for your smile:
Rum & Coke
Fizzy pop is bad for your teeth. Full sugar varieties are the worst, but even diet types are high in acid and are still bad for your teeth. Team it up with a dark alcohol like rum or whisky and you've got a drink that has the potential to contribute to staining the teeth as well.
Cider is extremely high in acid and sugar and it could wear away tooth enamel if you drink too much of it too often. Fruit ciders are even worse as they are even more sugary and bathe the teeth in acid and sugar for the entire time you're drinking them, then for the evening until you go home and brush your teeth.
There is still plenty of this year left, so why think about the New Year now you might ask? The thing is, certain types of dentistry do take time to accomplish. For example, teeth whitening at home may well take a few weeks to see results. Or perhaps a complete smile makeover might be your goal, which could take months to achieve the desired results because of the range of treatments involved.
It may be that you need to start saving now to afford the treatment of your dreams before Christmas, or you might be able to set some time aside now whereas you may get busier later in the year? Regardless of which amazing and transformational treatment you would like, now is the time to start thinking about your smile and how you want it to look going into 2018.

We will then show you how to apply the special whitening gel and complete the whitening at home either during the day or overnight. School is starting again, or has already started for many children this week. This is both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time, for both the parents and the children.

This can mean it is an absolute nightmare getting them back into the routine of getting ready for school, applying themselves at school, and completing homework afterwards. With this in mind, we wanted to give you a few tips to help with your child's oral health routine, so that you're equipped to help them maintain healthy teeth and gums and to help them feel good about looking after their smile:
Start The Routine ASAP
If your child is not back at school yet, or they have just gone back, then a routine needs to happen ASAP. The sooner they begin getting used to their oral health routine the better because it takes a good month or so for habits to form, and they may well take time to get used to it. Consider having something like a timed tooth brushing song, so you all know that when the song is playing, teeth are needing to be brushed! This should last for two minutes.
